Who were my students this semester?

 


During this semester, I had the pleasure to share and teach two groups of students on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The first group attended class at 6:00 pm and the other one attended the class at 8:00 pm. The encounters lasted an hour and a half in where the students had the chance to learn about several topics that are going to help them in the improvement of the language skills. Next, I would offer you a characterization of the students that finished successfully the course:

Group A

Name: Alex Santiago Hernández Céspedes

Group: A

Age: 20

Occupation: Student

Where from: Granada, Meta

English level: A2

Description: Alex is a smart student. He really likes English and one of his goals is becoming a teacher in a private school in his town and go abroad to study in other countries. He has a good level of English demonstrating good management of common and usual language. He likes to play video games and spend time with his family. He could work on the pronunciation of some words since he can express in a good way but he still sounds unnatural.

Achievements: Alex's development was so fruitful. At the end of the encounters, he shown good management in most of the topics taught. It was notable the improvement in his fluency and the connection of his ideas in a normal speech.

Name: Giseell Stefany Cerón Cárdenas

Group: A

Age: 18

Occupation: Student

Where from: Pie de Cuesta, Santander

English level: A1

Description: Giseell is a good student. She’s very punctual to join the class and always has a good attitude when she needs to participate in class although she gets nervous. She enjoys listening to music and hanging out with her family and friends. She could work on her vocabulary range and her pronunciation. That’s because of, precisely her lack of vocabulary tends to mispronounce unknown words. Related to the course, she wants to improve her speaking skills and fluency.

Achievements: At the beginning of classes, Gissell struggled with connecting her ideas and her fluency was not the best because of her fear to make a bad performance. Although her fluency did not was improved notably, her vocabulary range was expanded. At the end of the encounters, she could join her ideas easily making use of linkers, connectors, and expressions that gave her self-confidence related to her speech.


Name: Lilibeth Delgado Ballesteros

Group: A

Age: 21

Occupation: Student

Where from: Villanueva, Santander

English level: A1-A2

Description: Lilibeth is a smart student but she feels afraid of failure in her performance. That’s why she tends to avoid participating in class or tries to be very quick in her appreciation. Nevertheless, she understands the instruction very quickly knows how to put into practice the known piece of knowledge acquired. She has had some troubles with her internet connection and that has been a difficulty in her attendance of the class.

Achievements: During the course, Lilibeth improved her self-confidence regarding her speaking performance. Although she struggles with her fluency yet, it is very notable the way in how she has improved her flow to connect the ideas smoothly. Also, her vocabulary was improved so that she could get expression tools to express her ideas clearly.


Name: Jireth Daniela Hernández Forero

Group: A

Age: 17

Occupation: Student

Where from: Santander

English level: A1-A2

Description: She is an enthusiastic student. She’s very cheerfully and tries to participate in class to improve their communication skills. Despite her age, she has a good range of vocabulary and tries to express her opinions and arguments in a clear way. Nevertheless, she could work on improving her mental structures to organize effectively her ideas because usually struggles with this.

Achievements: Jireth was constant in her educational process. She could improve her self-confidence to speak in front of her mates even when the camera was on. Her vocabulary was improved as well as the use of some expressions to transmit her ideas clearly and effectively.


Name: Jose Agustin Chirino Rangel

Group: A

Age: 33

Occupation: Student and worker in a pharmacy

Where from: Curumaní, Cesar

English level: A1

Description: In despite of being older than the other mates, he still has a good attitude to participate in class without fear, shy or nervous. He tries to give his best in each participation and tries to incorporate the new knowledge in his daily speech. Although he struggles with the pronunciation of some words and with some gramma structures, he has been working on it and tried to improved his gaps. He has been consistent in his classes’ attendance.

Achievements: Jose was one of the best students during the encounters. His fluency was improved remarkably and the use of some expressions made him being able to sound fluent connecting his ideas smoothly and rhythmically.

Group B

Name: Natalia Bustos Morales

Group: B

Age: 20

Occupation: Student and worker at Movistar

Where from: Monterrey, Casanare

English level: A2-B1

Description: Natalia is a good student with a good English level, has demonstrated good use of the principles of the grammar rules and, although sometimes gets stuck giving an opinion or just arguing something, she tries to explain the same idea in other words, making her able to communicate with other people effectively. She could work on mental structures that allow her to a better organization of her ideas. She has had difficulties joining some classes but expresses that will improve this part in the future.

Achievements: Natalia did a great job during the encounters. As a result of her work, she could improve her fluency and expand her vocabulary range. Despite she had quite a busy schedule due to her work, she was able to work on each topic taught reaching the objectives at the end of the course.

Name: Daniela Katalina Riaño Rincón

Group: B

Age: 20

Occupation: Student

Where from: Boyacá

English level: A1

Description: Daniela is one of the students with a low English level. She expressed in the beginning that has studied a course on basic English but her problem is she fears making mistakes and fail in her participation. After the first class, she wrote me explaining she wanted to quit the course because she felt the course level was more than she thought. Although I talked to her and explained to her that the idea is to push ourselves beyond our comfort zone and she agreed, it hasn’t possible to listen to her participation very often. She could work on her confidence first, before focusing on English skills.

Achievements: The most important achievement in Danila's process was the improvement of her self-confidence and self-esteem to make a good performance in her participation during each class. At the beginning of the encounter, she struggled with these things and almost gave up in the first classes. After talking to her about these issues, she worked on them and, at the end of the process, she showed an excellent improvement on this being more participating in the activities


Name: Juan David Silva Garzón

Group: B

Age: 27

Occupation: Student and worker at a call center

Where from: Soacha, Cundinamarca

English level: B2-C1

Description: He has a great English level. Actually, is the more advanced student in both groups. Nowadays, he works in a call center company in the bilingual department being exposure to the English language all days. Although his excellent management of English language, he’s polite with his mates, tends to help them and does not seem boring in the classes. In fact, is one of the most punctual. He would like to go abroad and study and work in countries like the UK.

Achievements: Actually, Juan David had an excellent English level before getting started the classes. Although, he incorporated in his wide vocabulary range some of the expressions taught during the sessions like expressions for giving opinions and some linkers. They really did an excellent job despite his proficiency

Name: Fabian Esteban Garcia Espitia

Group: B

Age: 26

Occupation: Student and worker

Where from: Bogotá

English level: A2

Description: Fabian seemed at the beginning as one of the students with a high English level. Nevertheless, while the counters went by, he lost his enthusiasm for participating and tried to avoid it. Although he’s polite with both the students and the teacher, he tries to avoid interaction with his mates. He could work on mental structures that allow him to organize his ideas in a better way taking into account he has a good range of vocabulary and has a good pronunciation.

Achievements: Fabian could incorporate and use expressions that made his speech more rythmical joining the ideas smoothly. Althoug he could not improve notably his fluency, he can get the fundamentals of each lesson and topic and showed a good performance in the final test making use of the tools learned previously
